Grandfather to Father, Father to Son – Family Owned Rafael’s
Mexican Restaurant Has Been Part of the Salt Lake Landscape for
30 Years.
Jose
Chavez (lovingly referred to as "Papa") developed a trusted Sandy City
source for fine Mexican food in 1979, and Daniel Chavez believed so
much in his father's vision that now, Rafael's is celebrating 30 years
of authentic Mexican food from a fine Utah Mexican family. We like to
think of it as one of the most delicious authentic Mexican restaurants
in Salt Lake.
Rafael's started out in Sandy's Union Square but
quickly out-grew the space. Most Friday and Saturday nights, people
would literally line up at the door and wait for as long as an hour to
get in. (And when the weather was cold many would wait in their cars!).
At that point, Rafael's decided to relocate to a bigger space in Sandy's Aspen Plaza
- right on the then-busy, Sandy City "parade route" of 9400 South. They spent a
robust 24 years at this location.
Now
in their new location at 9108 Village Shop Drive, they've spruced-up
the ambiance but the menu hasn't really changed much - it's only gotten
better. In fact, some say it's the best.
Thirty years of practice makes perfect and Rafael's is a true pioneer for authentic Mexican food in Sandy.
Then again, who could resist these meticulously handcrafted, fluffy-battered chile
rellenos and Rafael's rich chile verde? Trust me, Mexican food of this caliber is a
"gateway food" - once your senses get used to this level of tastefulness, you're
just going to crave that deliciousness in everything you eat!
Rafael's is a refuge for those seeking quick, fresh, authentic Mexican food. Unlike
the lineup-at-the-cafeteria pop-up variety of Mexican food out-fits that are a fad
these days, Rafael's serves-up authentic entres like molé enchiladas, fresh pico de
galio, the best re-fried beans on the planet, hand rolled enchiladas, homemade
tacos, burrittos, tostadas, quesadillas and flautas.
The bean dip alone is enough to make diners break into song. In fact, their bean dip
is what brings many customers back. (You'll get hooked on it should you give it a
whirl.) But that's just an appetizer at Rafael's.
Their fresh-made salsa is as good as their guacamole - a rare double-whammy in a
Mexican restaurant. And whatever you do, make sure that the house-made chilé verdé
is part of what your server delivers.
Eating at Rafael's is not an occasion for restraint - be sure to order their
home-made flan or hand-rolled sopapillas for dessert.
Rafael's has a long history of excellent food and is consistently a great value for
the money.
The original recipes came from Grandpa and Grandma Torres, of course. But over the
years they have been changed and adapted to suit the family's tastes, and the tastes
of the customers.
In spite of the fact that there are now over 30 employees, Rafael's is still very
much a family business. June 11-13 Rafael's is celebrating their 30th Anniversary by
adding several special Mexican foods to their menu, along with special pricing.
Rafael's has loved doing business in Sandy, and looks forward to another 30 years.
